“Duh” Economics, part 2

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

Don’t ever, ever, ever buy anthing you can’t afford.  Save your cash, then buy what you want or need.

Don’t ever buy a car because of the way it looks or because it boosts your ego.  Buy a car because it starts, runs great and gets great mileage.  Also, get the longest warranty you can, even if the car is used.  Squeeze the dealer for 90 days if you can.

When you go to buy your first house, get income property.  The more income, the better.  Let your tenants pay the mortgage!  The worse the economy gets, the better off you will be.  Most of my family has done this to great success, including myself.

Lastly, remember there is no such thing as entitlement.  Never make promises you can’t keep.  If you have to borrow money, always pay it back with no excuses.   Work hard, study hard, be patient and spend smartly.

“Duh” Economics 101

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

I heard we are going to start teaching children about finance in schools and I think we should be teaching it at the “Big 10″ universities, too.  I’ll bet these schools think they already do teach economics but they seem to need a few refresher courses. With that in mind, I’m going to devote a few blogs to “Duh” Economics and get students started in their upcoming classes.  Wall Street and government types might learn something, also.

  1. Hey kids, when you buy something, you must pay for it.
  2. In order to do this, you must have an income.
  3. If you don’t have a rich relative giving you money every week, you are going to have to get a job and earn the moneyThis, of course, does not mean taking someone else’s hard earned money and using it for pyramid or Ponzi schemes.
  4. Buying something on credit is like borrowing money.  You do have to pay it back.

These four “duh” principals of finance are all you will need to get you started on a life of financial security.  Tomorrow I will deal with more facts that should get you an “A” when you are enrolled in the new class at school, as well as help you stay out of jail and keep your friends.

The Homemaker’s Prediction for 2009

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

An edict of entitlement (in writing) will be issued forthwith to all famous sports figures, television and film stars, politicians, wall street magnates, and world and religious leaders, absolving them from any wrongdoing because of their fame, position and/or close proximity to those of wealth, power, status and prestige.

This edict will allow these people to continue acting out in various ways that suit them including but not limited to: Bush bashing, till dipping, corporate raiding, subtle and overt acts of bigotry, random acts of violence, abuse of office and occasional illegal drug use.

In other words, it will be just like last year.

Paris Hilton

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

She was supposedly robbed of two million dollars worth of stuff.  Good thing the thieves went to her house because if they had come to mine, the only valuables they would have found is an older T.V, a broken VCR and a DVD player that I can’t get to work either.  Well, maybe they’d snap up the microwave oven.  But you can get one of those at Wal Mart for only $39.95.  Maybe they’d take the computer I’m writing on but no one can access it without the code.  And, it’s not my favorite pet or my mother’s maiden name.

I’ve got some nice jewelry but they’d find out there’s a flaw in my diamond.  It’s really special because even Paris doesn’t have one like it.  Which brings us to the next question.  If someone has two million dollars worth of stuff in their home, why don’t they have a security system???  I know, I know.  She does have one.  In fact, she probably has several.  For sure, her little purse dog wasn’t protecting the property.

So, what was she thinking when she got all dolled up (doesn’t she always), then left her place to go partying or whatever and forgot to set the alarm???  All this proves is that she has so much to learn.  Even several million dollars doesn’t necessarily buy knowledge and experience.  Only time and age can do that.

Blagojevich/Mugabe

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

Yesterday, the governor of Illinois Rod Blagojevich, announced that instead of stepping down in light of a recent arrest and allegations of corrupt activities, he was going to fight to prove his innocence and never give up his position.

There is an interesting correlation between the governor and Robert Mugabe the president of Zimbabwe, who was ousted in March by the opposition, has not given up his position and is quoted as saying, “I will never, never, never surrender.”  He is also quoted as saying that international criticism of his government’s handling of the cholera outbreak was, “A pack of lies.”

Coincidentally, Blagojevich also said, “I will fight.  I will fight.  I will fight until my last breath.”  In his further defense he stated, “I am not going to quit a job that people hired me to do because of false accusations and a political lynch mob.”

Mugabe refused to step down saying, “Even if I am threatened with beheading.”

Blagojevich quoted Kipling:  “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs.”

Either these two guy are sharing the same speech writer or they’re test messaging across the continents, giving each other support they need to hold on to their positions of power.

What do you think?

NCAA Team Scandal

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

I overheard that some college basketball team members are in trouble for using drugs.  This is very unsettling first of all, because it’s a college team.  See what happens when you don’t show up for class?  That’s what started this whole thing.  They apparently didn’t learn the dangers of drug use or how their brains get fried when they smoke dope.  O.K., so maybe they were using pills.  The players apparently didn’t examine their brain sample tissue under the lab microscope after downing a few of those.

I thought these guys wanted to be healthy.  By skipping anatomy and bio chemistry 101 to shoot baskets (?) they missed seeing what steroids did to their livers.  I’m not even a jock and I’m afraid to touch that stuff.

Hey players, here’s a tip.  Eat lots of protein, go easy on dairy and lay off stuff that’s going to get you kicked off the team and out of school.

Stranger Danger

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

Oh, dear.  Just got through reading about a woman who was attacked, thrown in the back of a car and driven around by three young kidnappers while they shopped with her credit cards.  Luckily, the trio got stopped for a traffic infraction and the woman was set free.

Perhaps because she was 76 years old, the grandmotherly type may earlier have taken pity on a young man trying to sell her a vacuum cleaner.  That was her first mistake.  The salesman obviously “cased the joint” and returned with his friends to take more than the price of a cleaner from her house.

Why, oh why have we not taught the women of this world to never, never, never allow a stranger into their home, no matter what sad reason someone may give for wanting to enter?  Instead of buying a vacuum cleaner, this woman should have been purchasing pepper spray, bolt locks and a stun gun from a catalog.

Badly as I feel for her, I am astonished that a woman of her age has not been thoroughly indoctrinated into the evils that permeate a society,  just waiting for one more victim.  What if her grandchildren were in her care at the time?

I beg everyone reading this, to please educate your children, wives, mothers and grandmothers on the art of protecting themselves and make sure they have the safety devices necessary to live with comfort and security wherever they may happen to be!

Remember the Frozen Turkey Attack?

Published by homemaker under Current Events Edit This

Well, that was at Thanksgiving.  Now we have a new one for Christmas.  In Miramar, Florida, Eric Lopez Devictoria had a gun pulled on him during a pizza delivery.  Just before being fired on, quick-thinking Eric threw his hot, pepperoni pizza at the perpetrator, then ran like heck.  Mr. Devictoria called the police giving them time to catch three teenage suspects soon after the incident.  The delivery man was unhurt and the suspects have been charged with armed robbery.

Reports did not specify whether or not the perpetrators were actually eating the pizza when they were caught.

I like this story.  it gives those of us who are essentially “unarmed” hope.  Jeez, if a greasy pizza can ward off a thief (or attacker), I wonder what other handy items we could use to defend ourselves with, aside from a frozen Thanksgiving turkey.

What would you suggest?
